edenfound at the movies

As a mother of 2 kids under 5 I don't get many opportunities to go the cinema very often. So I usually wait till they put them on the telly and watch them in the comfort of my own front room (much cheaper). However, it has to be said, there are some films that need to be seen on a big screen (and no, Mr C, that is not an excuse to buy a bigger television....). So, I've made a decision that I'm going to take myself to the movies more than once before the year is out -  which is just as well because there are some really great films  being released soon - have a look at this little lot!

The Great Gatsby

I've been meaning to read this book for a while now, so I hope I get around to it before the film comes out. It's coming out around Christmas time and it's directed by Baz Luhrmann, so it's bound to be good. Strictly Ballroom and Romeo & Juliet were also directed by Luhrmann and they are are two of my favourite films. Have a look at the trailer:

It's set in 1920s America too, so I'm sure we'll see a raft 20s fashion this Christmas, so I thought I'd get in early with this little number from Topshop.

Skyfall

We all love a bit of Bond, right? Here's a trailer for the the latest offering:

And for every wannabe Bond girl out there, here's the perfect little black dress for you that will most definitely break the bank (well, it'd break mine). Time to go fishing for money down the back of the settee methinks....

Les Miserables

I simply ADORE this musical! my husband took us to see it for our anniversary and I sung the songs around the house solidly for months weeks (sorry hun). The film version is out at Christmas and to say that I'm excited about seeing it doesn't even cover it. To all the people who know me I may as well apologise now - I WILL BE SINGING THE SONGS AND TALKING ABOUT THIS FILM ALL THROUGH CHRISTMAS. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WITNESS THIS, THEN PLEASE DO NOT INVITE ME ROUND. There, you've been warned. Anyhoo, here's the trailer....

Ps. when I went to see the musical I experienced a bit of coat envy. One of the characters, Javert, wore a great military style coat for the duration of the play. If you, like me, are partial to a bit of military styling, here's a little number for you. Enjoy.

That's all folks - pass the popcorn!

new directions

Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower

No, this isn't a post expressing the wonders of Glee (I only lasted till season 2 - I found myself fast forwarding the dialogue to get to the songs. When I found myself fast forwarding the songs too I knew it was the beginning of the end)

A few people have commented on  how empty my Etsy shop has been looking of late. It's true, there is nothing to be seen in there at the moment. I spent many an hour over the summer mulling over what I have done so far with Edenfound and where I wanted it to go and I've decided to change direction.

I will be exhibiting my new items at the Winter Wonderland Christnas Market on Saturday 8th December, which means I will be a busy bee over the next few weeks. But, don't worry I shall keep you all posted....

Bye for now....

I made this: paper hearts

Original image by Esther Orridge 2012
These paper hearts featured quite heavily at the Tea at the Cathedral Event we held last weekend. Not only did we use them to decorate the room (hung in single rows on fishing wire), but all the ladies who attended were given the opportunity to make their own. As a craft, these hearts are ideal as the only implement you need are scissors and a stapler.

I got the idea from a 'how to' on a blog (Unfortunately I can't remember which blog that was!) so I can't claim that the idea is my own.

Of the 2 crafts available on the day, this proved to be the most popular, so here's a step by step guide to making your own:

You need:
9 Strips of paper about 15cm (6 inches) in length (I cut mine out of an old music book from a charity shop, but maps also make a great option)
Scissors
A stapler
A hole punch (not pictured because I've lost mine - aarrgh!)

1. Take one strip and fold it in half. Use a hole punch to put a hole into the folded end. We'll use this hole to hang the heart up with afterwards. Place the folded piece down onto the table.

2. Take out 2 strips and place them down either side of the folded piece.

3. Gather the other strips of paper and cut about 2.5cm (1 inch) off the top. Take two of these strips and place them either side of the folded piece. Continue this process until you have no more strips left. Discard your scraps.

4. Gather all your strips together in the order that they are laid down. Your pile should go from the shortest to the longest and back again with the folded piece in the middle. Gather them all at one end and staple.

6. Hold the strips by the stapled end. Bend the strips over and secure at the end with another staple.

7. Hey presto, you have your very own paper heart!!

These are so simple to make and not only do they look great hung in rows, but they make great Christmas decorations too! (Did I just say the C word - yeah I did!).

If you try this, let me know how you got on!

tea at the cathedral

I came, I saw, I tea partied (or something like that). Saturday was the day of the Tea at the Cathedral Event that I, and several others, had been organising at church. It was a charity tea party to raise funds for our wonderful church building and it was a great opportunity for us women to get together, have a natter and drink copious amounts of tea!

A lot of work went into it as we had a lot of high hopes for the event and didn't want to disappoint. In fact, planning this was the main reason for my blogging hiatus over the past few months.

For their entrance fee, the ladies got their cream tea and their chance to get crafty, a little bit of pampering if they wanted it and a gift bag - what a bargain, eh?

With a red carpet and a little bit of live music thrown into the mix too, it turned out to be a great event and a good time was had by all. Even better, we raised a lot of money for the charity in the process!

Many an afternoon (and evening) was spent making the cupcake flags for the gift bags, making paper pom poms, making paper heart bunting and drilling holes in vintage china to make cake plates  - all in preparation for the big day..... phew! More info on how to make those soon....

Lastly, a very BIG THANK YOU SHOUT OUT needs to go to Steady Hire Ltd for letting us use their chairs and tables for free! And to Marina at Knittery who shared her knitting expertise with everybody!
AND to the wonderful team of ladies who worked with me to put this event together - you know who you are - I couldn't have done it without you!

Till next year.....

back to work beauties: on yer bike!

Do you remember when you were younger when you used to just ride your bike just because you loved it?

Watching our wonderful Olympians in the Velodrome this summer (yes, I am still talking about the Olympics) has got me hankering after a bike of my very own. I used to love riding my bike when I was a kid - I literally spent hours riding up and down my road (it wasn't a long street, it was only as far as I was allowed to go - thanks mum.) and I long to do that again.

As a result, I've been doing a lot of bike related interweb searching these days. So here are my bicycle related Back to Work Beauties for this week. Enjoy x

summer lovin'

Please excuse the cheesy title, but WOW, what a glorious summer it has been! First the Golden Jubilee celebrations and then the spectacle that was the 2012 Olympics. I can't believe that summer is over. But over it is and now the nights are rolling in there seems no good excuse not to flex those bony fingers of mine over a keyboard once more and get blogging.

A couple weeks ago we celebrated the birthday of one of my dear friends with a tea party in her honour. Considering the rain has played as big a part in the British summer as the Olympics itself, we were pleasantly surprised by the appearance of the sun in the sky.

see, those meringues are tiny!

Holdsworth House was the perfect setting for our gathering and after drinks in the garden, were were taken to a private room where we were served with our quintessential English fare. Although I am a lover all all things kitsch and vintage, and am hosting my very own tea party myself next week (more about that in future posts) I have to admit I actually don't like the taste of tea or cream* (I know - shocker, huh?!).

obligatory vintage china
But fret not - I didn't go hungry. After drinking my own body weight in coffee, I quickly polished off smoked salmon sandwiches, a chocolate muffin and  five a few mini lemon meringue pies. Delicious!!

the aftermath

It was the perfect birthday treat for my most girly of girlfriends and the perfect send-off to what has been a great summer. If you're interested in booking Afternoon Tea at Holdsworth House, then please click here.

ps. the only 'downer' to the whole afternoon was the strange picture in the corner of the room. It gave a weird slant to the party, I must say. I tried to look away, but my eyes kept being drawn to it. Bit of a buzzkill to be honest, see for yourself...

I mean, really

REALLY!!

Anyhoo, Happy Birthday Lucy - I hope you enjoyed your day!!

(I know, you can't stop looking at that painting, right?)

* don't judge me, I have tried to like tea, honest.

confessions of a lazy blogger

Dear Blogspot

I know that we've not seen much of each other recently, you've probably been wondering what's going on and where you stand. It's true, we have grown apart, but I feel you should know, it's not you  - it's me.

When we first got together things were really great - everything was new and it was all full of excitement. We spoke every day, sometimes more than once a day, and I would tell you what I'd done with my time, show you photos and I would even share my innermost thoughts with you. So deep was our mutual appreciation others would even comment on what they saw.

But something happened. We started talking less, conversation became stilted and before I knew what was happening, I was reading other people's blogs. Please don't blame yourself, there was nothing you could have done differently, it's just that I'm not ready for that kind of commitment right now. You want more from me but I'm like a bird. I need to fly. So if I visit a local beauty spot or see a great view I won't beat myself up for forgetting my camera. If I make a great looking meal, I won't feel guilty for scoffing it immediately before taking the time to take the perfect shot and if I spy a great bargain in a charity shop, I don't have to tell you if I don't want to.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy spending time with you. For starters you're a great listener, low maintenance and your memory is amazing, but I can't guarantee that I will always use correct grammar and that my pictures will always be in focus.

Please don't try to change me. This blog will never be A Beautiful Mess, but I promise I will try harder to make it work. For example, I saw these and thought of you.

I love you, but I'm not in love with you, so I think it's better that we remain just friends.

I promise we'll speak soon

Yours

Michelle - aka the lazy blogger.

shop love: the village haberdashery

Every so often my adventures on the internet make me say, 'Oh my gosh, breathe..!' and when I found this shop I said just that. The Village Haberdashery is, well....a haberdashery. It caters for knitters, needlepointers, embroiderers and crocheters (I would have included those who sew, but no one wants to be called a sewer...do they...?). I found the site just over a week ago and every time I find myself on the internet (which is a lot - Housework...? What's that?) I keep finding myself back in the shop musing over what dress pattern/fabric I might buy.

The layout of the shop is great, it's simple and easy to navigate, but more importantly, I'm in love with the beautiful items they stock. Here is my wishlist (I may have to hide my purse).....

The 'Birthday Party' dress pattern by Oliver + S. Cuteness in a packet.

The 'Scirocco' dress pattern by Figgy's. So gorgeous. I can't decide which one I want to make for my girls.

The 'Banksia top' pattern my Megan Nielsen. It's currently sold out, but I've got my eye on this one....

... and finally, this fabric by Michelle Engel Bencsko. To. Die . For.

So, that's my wishlist. check out The Village Haberdashery for yourself and see what catches your eye!

Bye for now

Sunny Saturday

Those of you that hail from outside Britain may be baffled by the British obsession with the weather. But if you look at the weather we've had so far this year it's very easy to see why. Back in March we had a week of glorious sunshine. Suntan lotion was applied, ice creams were eaten and children played in the garden. However, just a week later the ground was covered in snow. Moving onto this season and our summer has been largely punctuated by rain with the occasional day of sunshine. British weather is extreme and it's unpredictable - it's no wonder why we talk about it all the time!

Anyway, on Saturday afternoon I spotted something yellow in the sky. On further inspection it turned out to be the sun (yay!) so me and my eldest daughter seized the opportunity, donned our wellies and went fruit picking at Bentley Grange.

After a couple of minor mishaps (I forgot to bring sun cream and cash, thankfully the lovely folks at the farm took cards), me and my eldest daughter took to the fields...

'Look Mummy! horses!'
squelch!
The fruit of our labour - no pun intended

We picked strawberries and raspberries (although they also grow blackcurrants, redcurrants and gooseberries). They grow the strawberries on tables so it's not even back breaking work. It's a great way to pass the time with your kids. Whizz Kid loved it and I can't wait to take my youngest when she's old enough next year. The fact that the sun came out topped the day off quite nicely, but even in the rain it would have been fun.

Do you have any PYO (that stands for Pick Your Own by the way - yeah, I speak the lingo) farms near you? I can highly recommend paying them a visit - even if it's raining!

Got to go - I've got strawberries to eat!! Yummy!!

soundtrack to my life : Julia Stone

Sometimes a song gets into my head, sets up camp and won't leave. It plays on repeat and acts as a backing track to all that I do. I slowly drive myself and those around me crazy singing it all the time (not to mention humming the bits I don't know). The song doesn't even have to be good (Go Compare anyone?). But sometimes, only sometimes I get a song in my head that's actually good.  This one is by Julia Stone and it's called  'You're The One That I Want'. It's a cover of the song from Grease, but don't let that put you off. I've listened to it countless times and I still love it. I thought I'd share the love.

See what I mean? It's beautiful. I can't get enough. How 'bout you?

Bye for now (ooh ooh ooh....)

New balls please!

Has anyone else been watching Wimbledon? Well, if you're British, of course you have! Usually, the spectacle of people hitting balls at each other leaves me cold but I've really got into it this year. Is it the display of skill? The prospect of an actual British champion? Yes and yes, but there's also one other thing that's luring me in....the Wimbledon umpires jackets. Have you seen them? Ooooh! They are works of art, things of beauty, and with all things that remain elusive, I want one.

They are made by Ralph Lauren and the ones I have seen for sale (on eBay) are considerably out of my price range, but here is a selection of sporting blazers available on the interweb - ranging from the outright expensive to credit crunch affordable. Enjoy!

I made this: doilie necklace

We were on holiday a couple weeks ago, so the days leading up to our departure were filled with packing and last minute travel preparation. Or at least they should have been. Ever the eternal procrastinator, I found myself tinkering away in our spare room making this and that. One of the first diys I made for this blog was my crochet doilie top. I still had some doilies left over so I decided to make this necklace.

All you need to make a necklace like this one are:
* crochet doilies (you can find these in all good charity shops)
* jump rings (you can find these on etsy/eBay)
* broken necklaces and jewellery bits and bobs (if you're like me, you can find these in your drawer!)
* pliers (if you don't have any of these, a blunt pair of scissors will usually do)

1) Find the centre of the necklace and snip.
2) Attach jump rings to the necklace ends and attach to the doilie.
3) Embellish necklace as much as you please.

The finished result looks like this...

Pretty simple, huh! Have you upcycled any old jewellery recently?

Over and out

ps. Sorry about the badly lit pictures folks, it's been dark and rainy here for AAAAGGESS! Nice weather for ducks.......

I made this

A few weeks ago I posted a list of crafty-type things I wanted to achieve. Don't remember it? You can read it here. Well, I have good news to share. No, I've not finished my cross stitch - although I did sit down and complete part of it. My good news is that I've learnt to crochet and only on my 2nd attempt! Hurrah!! Big thanks have to go out to Pip from Meet Me At Mikes blog who has step by step instructions and videos which were really really helpful.

Anyway, do you want to see the finished result? Course you do! Here goes...

Not bad, huh? It's a bit winky wonky, but I'm quite proud of it. The only thing is, now I've done it, I don't know what to do with it. I'm toying with either making a cushion cover or a picnic blanket. Hmmm, decisions, decisions....

In other news, I've also managed to cross a couple other items off my list. Items 5 and 7 are works in progress. I'm afraid I can't say more than that. All will be revealed in time....

Have you managed to cross anything off your lists this week? Good luck if you're still trying.

Ta-ra for now

take one bracelet...

I'm going to let you into a secret. I hate bracelets. Maybe it's the combination of having wrists like a malnourished toddler and always being cold that put me off. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of them, but they always seem to jangle around my poor excuses for forearms and give me the shivers.

My sister bought me a bunch of jewellery for my birthday a few years ago and I have to confess I never wore the bracelet - the very size of it made me shudder. But my mother taught me to be grateful - I mean, you can't throw out a gift, right? So, after years of it languishing (can a piece of costume jewellery languish? I'd like to think it can....hmmm....anyway, I digress... ) at the bottom of my jewellery drawer, I decided to give it a makeover.

All you need to makeover your bracelet is: scissors, glue, ribbon a brass charm and a clothes peg.

1) Glue the ribbon to the inside of the bracelet and wind it round the bracelet. (careful that you don't wind it too much else the bracelet won't fit around your wrist. Yes, I really am that dumb.)

2)  Fix the end with a little glue and secure with a clothes peg whilst you wait for glue to dry.

3) Bend the charm to fit the contours of the bracelet. I got my charm from here. Glue it down. I secured mine whilst the glue was drying with, you guessed it, a clothes peg!

4) Wear with pride.

So simple, I made a little one too!

Have a go and revamp some your jewellery too!

Love

Jam and Jerusalem

Do you ever get into creative ruts? I do. You may have noticed, but things went a bit quiet here for a while. It was as if I had lost my blogging mojo. Nothing major had happened. It was just that not much was happening in my brain that was worth committing to a keyboard. I needed some inspiration and I needed it quick. Thankfully, it came in the form of my local WI. The WI, or Women's Institute for those who don't know is a British, community-based organisation for women. Their known for making jam and singing Jerusalem (hence the title of this post), but there's way more to them than that.

Even though the WI has always interested me I only found out recently that we had a local branch, so me and a couple of my friends went along to our first meeting not really knowing what to expect. We needn't have worried. Everyone we met was absolutely lovely. Me, Beth and Lou were introduced to card making by the lovely Jenny and after a slow start involving lots of ho humming, all three of us got stuck in. Here's what we made (apologies for the bad lighting - we took them on the Town Hall stairs straight afterwards)

Louise made this - I would totally buy it!

Mine and Beth's cards

Not bad for first attempts, eh? In fact, Louise's was so good, I think she should seriously consider taking it up as a hobby!

I hadn't gone along with the intention of getting ideas, but I was so inspired when I got back that I made a whole load of things for my shop. There are going to be lots of changes at edenfound in the next few weeks, so my inspiration came at the right time.

If you're thinking of joining your local WI, I suggest that you go for it. They're not at all stuffy or old fashioned - in fact as I write this, the Huddersfield contingent are on their way to a knife throwing workshop! Check out the WI website to find your local group. And if you're a Huddersfield local, click here.

Thanks Beth, Lou, Jenny and co  - I had a great evening and I've totally got my groove back!!!!

See you next time!!

back to work beauties

Hi folks

It's been a while since I've posted anything. For a while it seemed like every blogger in Britain was talking about the Jubilee, which was great, but anything I would have had to say on the matter did seem rather superfluous to requirements. That said - I do send my heartfelt congratulations to you, Ma'am. I feel very proud to be British.

Anyhoo, for those of you who took advantage of the extra Bank Holiday (courtesy of Her Majesty) and had a whole week off, here are some Back to Work Beauties for you to look at - 10 wonderful things you can find on Etsy right now. I've gone girly this week and the theme is pink - no crowns or bunting in sight. Enjoy...

Hope you liked this week's choices! Now, back to work!!

vintage shoppping

Well, everyone else seems to be doing it, so why not me? There seems to be an explosion of blog posts at the moment of people showing off their latest charity shop finds. I don't know if it's a coincidence, or if all this good weather we've been having in Britain is slowly turning us into a nation of shopaholics. Global recession, Eurozone crisis, pah!

Anyhoo, not wanting to be outdone, I've done a bit of bargain hunting myself. My eldest daughter goes for ballet lessons (I know, I'm living the middle class dream - deal with it) in a little village near our home and visiting the 2 charity shops in the village has become part of my Saturday morning routine. Most weeks I come away empty handed, but this week was different. Check it out! Eeeek!!

The jug I thought was beautiful and was actually something we needed. The other stuff I bought because they  were cheap and I liked them. The pink tea set I've seen selling on Ebay for way more than I was prepared to pay, so when I saw this set of 4 trios (cup + sauce + side plate - cos I speak the lingo, you know) going for a song, I had to snap them up. The Queen Elizabeth Coronation trio I'm pretty sure is not vintage, but since I've bought nothing jubilee related at all I thought it best to enter into the spirit of things. And talking of things monarchy related, I thought I'd snap this cute teapot up as well - complete with it's original label! Result!!

I know I've blogged about this kind of stuff before, but, as Jem on Beautiful Clutter says, if you're not into vintage teacups, then you're probably reading the wrong blog. I am kinda addicted to buying this stuff. In fact, when I paid for my items, the lovely man in the charity shop asked me if I was having a tea party. I didn't have the heart to tell him no, so I lied and said yes. Oh dear, surely the next step for me is hiding my stash around the house and denying their existence..... might have to get my fix somewhere else......

Happy shopping, peeps!

blogs I love

Aaaah, the joys of blogging.... the relaxtion.... the calm........

.....ha ha don't make me laugh! Actually, my blogging experience is nothing like this at all. First of all, I very rarely get a post written in one sitting. My typing is usually punctuated by a little girl asking for Peppa Pig and chocolate, an even littler girl trying to sit on my lap and both girls trying to touch the keyboard when I'm not looking. The joys of motherhood, eh?! For every fight I break up there's a cuddle and a kiss for mummy and that makes it all worth it. Just recently I was reminded that all too soon they'll grow up and move out and I will miss being referee and chief nose wiper. Plus, as I often tell my eldest, no one likes a whinger, so i should just sit back and enjoy it.

I'm quite new to this blogging lark - I've only been blogging and twittering since March this year. Since I've started though I've discovered a load of blogs that I really love, so here are just 3 of my favourites:

abeautifulmess.typepad.com - the mother of all blogs. In fact, this blog was the inspiration for me to start blogging in the first place. If you like vintage fashion, food and travel, this blog is for you. Elsie and her sister, Emma, have kept this blog active for years, so the archive posts are worth reading too.

athriftymrs.com - another mother of a blog. If you like to save money (and let's face it, who doesn't?), then this is the blog for you. Watch out for her 'Saturday Savings' posts if you like to spend on ye olde interweb. Mrs Thrifty will also have you in stitches.

beautifulclutter.blogspot.com - vintage teacup heaven. If you share my love for vintage stuff, then you'll love this too. I especially love the photos of all her vintagey bits and bobs.

That's it for now. What do you think of my list? Can you recommend any great blogs? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Speak to you soon!

unfinished business

Am I the only person who starts jobs but never finishes them? I thought not. I've got a fairly long list of new crafts I'd like to try. It's a fairly substantial list and it gets longer every day. The thing is, I promised myself I wouldn't start a new craft until I finished the one I was working on, and at the moment, I'm working on this:

(guess which one's mine)

It's a cross stitch pattern by Emily Peacock and I've been working on it for (wait for it) 3 years!! Although it's supposed to be made into a cushion, the plan is to have it on my wall - far away from chocolately fingers! I absolutely love the print and I'm sure seeing it on my wall will give me a tremendous sense of achievement, but right now, I just want to move onto the next thing.

Do you ever get like that? Do you start projects only to get bored halfway through, or are you a good 'finisher'? My wishlist of things I'd like to try next ranges from the specific to the vague and it looks a little like this...

1. Learn to crochet
2. Make some crochet bunting
3. Make a crochet blanket
4. Start my 'Coffee' cross stitch
5. Make more things out of my ridiculously large pile of vintage scarves (seriously, they're no good to me in a box)
6. frame more pictures of vintage ladybird book illustrations.
7. Make more things with bows

Hmm... I can't wait to get started on that little lot! Which one should I try first? What projects are you waiting to finish off? Let's make May finishing off month!

.......or maybe June.....

.....no, let's make it July....

..oh dear..

Gotta go - I've got more procrastinating to do!

Haworth

You've heard of Haworth, right? It's a little village in Yorkshire that's famous for being the home of the Bronte sisters. It's also home to the most wonderful festival of vintage. Every year this delightful village hosts a 1940s Vintage Weekend where the residents and shopkeepers dress up to celebrate the best of Britain.

I wasn't able to attend the festival on the Saturday and Sunday, so me, Mr C and the girls popped down on the Friday and made a day of it. The weather was freezing cold - who'd have thought we'd still need our winter coats in May! - but it didn't matter because there was lots of fun to be had...

Our first stop was the vintage fair, and as you can see from the pictures below, it truly was a thing of beauty. When I walked around I began to regret bringing Mr C with me as I knew I wouldn't be able to justify buying the Elizabeth II plate (among other things...) Sigh.....

From there we went for a walk around the town. All I can say is, I've never seen so much bunting...

While the rest of the troops were taking a well deserved coffee break I stumbled upon what has to be one of the most beautiful shops in the world - Rose & Co Apothecary. I'll use 3 words to describe it. Total - Vintage - Heaven. Enough said really.

If you're thinking of taking a trip to Haworth, I highly recommend you pay a visit here and to Oh la la Vintage...

I've been living in Yorkshire for 15 years now and I'm ashamed to say this was my first visit to Haworth. It definitely won't be my last. Thanks Haworth!!
